Stairway - Maddy Lane
The opening up of the stairway was a major design change with this house. The staircase was entirely walled-in, with a doorway at the bottom of the stairs. In removing the door and part of the wall, we were able to create more space and a better flow. In doing so, we had the opportunity to incorporate some design elements that would make the room feel more modern and visually interesting. The newel post, made by a woodworker in Brooklyn, is a more modern silhouette, and two different shaped balusters have been incorporated to create just the right amount of detail. The materials used, white oak and matte black iron, also compliment each other, and are meant to be a pairing reflected in the new front door and its hardware.
